Melisa Hicks, D.V.M.



I am Dr. Melisa Hicks the new owner of Kapa’au Veterinary Center.

I was born and raised in Denver, Colorado, went to college in Fort Collins, Colorado and received my Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Colorado State University.


  • I am licensed to practice veterinary medicine in California and Hawaii
  • I received a Veterinary Honor Roll Award from Moms Animal Foundation for compassion, understanding, knowledgeable care, and kindness for animals

After vet school, I moved to Southern California where I met my husband. We lived in Long Beach California for over 20 years but we always dreamed of living in Hawaii.

I co-owned a 3-doctor veterinary hospital in Long Beach where I did all the surgeries and cared for many dogs, cats, and a few rabbits and guinea pigs.

Here are a few things you might like to know about me…..

– I have wanted to be a veterinarian since I was in kindergarten
– I have a special interest in internal medicine and geriatrics
– I have a K-laser certification for doing laser therapy on pets
– Regardless of the diagnosis, I place upmost emphasis on developing a course of treatment that is reasonable, fair, and humane for every patients unique needs
– I think it’s important to have an integrative practice that combines Western and Eastern Medicine including herbs, acupuncture and laser therapy
– I like kayaking, snorkeling, and scuba diving, and traveling to tropical Islands
– I am looking forward to learning how to paddle an outrigger canoe someday
– I am a Denver Broncos football fan
– I like to read and would love if you would suggest a good book to me
– My husband is a golf professional
– My husband and I are also ceramic artists
– I currently have 2 dogs (Kona & Koa) and 1 cat (Maui)

My goal is to continue to provide health and balance using western medicine and holistic medicine to achieve the best possible outcome for your pets.
