OUR SERVICES

Routine and Preventative Care

We are a small animal practice and recommend regular check ups to keep your pet healthy.  A comprehensive history, complete physical examination and basic lab work allow us to establish a baseline of your pets health.  Health problems that go undetected can become more serious when left untreated and can be more expensive.

Surgery

We perform surgery in our on-site surgery suite.  Your pet's safety is our top priority.  During surgery we utilize monitoring equipment including pulse oximetry, Doppler blood pressure, ECG, and IV fluids.  We include a complementary nail trim for every patient that is sedated.

Dental Care

Healthy teeth are an important part of your pet's oral health.  During a dental procedure your pet will be sedated and your pet's teeth will be cleaned using an  ultrasonic scaler and hand scaling  After cleaning, the teeth will be polished.  If necessary, we will extract broken or unhealthy teeth.

Laser Therapy

Kapa’au Veterinary Center offers Class IV Therapy Laser for laser treatments.  Our doctors and staff have been trained to use this modality.

Three things happen during laser treatment.  First infrared laser therapy helps reduce pain and inflammation.  Second, laser treatment improves tissue healing and accelerates tissue regeneration.  Third, it can be useful for arthritis, wound healing, routine surgery, infections, acute injuries and so much more.

Microchipping / Lost or Found Pets

Every year many pets go missing.  Microchipping can help get your pet home safe if they are lost or go missing.  A microchip is a tiny chip (about the size of a grain of rice) that is placed under your pet's skin for permanent identification.

This is a safe, quick procedure that can be done during an annual examination or during surgery.

Tour pet's microchip is kept on file at Kapa’au Veterinary Center and registered locally with Michelson Found Animals with your information.  The microchip can be scanned by any veterinarian or animal shelter so your pet can be returned to you.

If you have lost or found a pet, or have animal-related concerns, please visit the County of Hawaii Animal control page for protocol and who to contact:

Vaccinations

Vaccines prevent infectious diseases and there are many lifestyle vaccines that are only necessary depending on your pet's activities.  We are happy to discuss vaccinations and determine which vaccines are best for your pet.

Diagnostics

Kapa’au Veterinary Center has state of the art in-house laboratory machines so we can get important information regarding your pets health in a timely manner.

We also use IDEXX Laboratory on the mainland for tests that cannot be run at the clinic.

Nutritional Counseling

Many pets are overweight, and obesity can cause many health problems.  Also, pet's nutritional needs can change as they enter different stages of their lives.

Sometimes weight gain or weight loss can be an indication of a health issue.  We are happy to discuss your pet's nutrition.  At Kapa’au Veterinary Center we carry high quality dog and cat food as well as human grade meats for making your own pet food.

Health Certificates

If you are going to the mainland and will be taking your pet with you, we can provide an examination and Health Certificate for travel.  We do not offer International Health certificate exams.

Please be sure to check with your airline and the state you are going to for requirements needed for your pet to enter the state.

If you are from Hawaii and plan on vacationing with your pet on the mainland please go to the Department of Agriculture website: www.hawaii.gov/ai/aqs/info and go to the “Pets Located in Hawaii” section for requirements.

Senior Pet Care

Our older pets need more frequent visits.  We recommend that your Senior pet come in twice a year (every 6 months).  Unfortunately, our pets age faster than we do so it is important that we keep closer tabs on our Senior pets.

We also recommend regular blood tests to monitor for internal health issues like kidney disease, liver disease and diabetes.

Pharmacy

At Kapa’au Veterinary Center we have an on-site pharmacy to fill your pet's prescription needs.  You can conveniently pick up your pets medications at our office and start the medications immediately.  Please provide at least 72 hours’ notice for prescription refills.

Pet Supplies

At Kapa’au Veterinary Center we carry high quality dog and cat food as well as human grade meats for making your own pet food.

We carry Lupine leashes and collars.  They are high quality, durable and guaranteed for life.  If they break or your pet chews it in half, bring it back and we will replace it at no charge.

We also carry a quality selection of pet care needs so you can avoid a trip to Kona.
